Our Freedom at Risk?

Angela Merkel's quote on hate, violence and the role of justice

Our Freedom at Risk?

While we are preparing and stimulating a public debate on freedom, in book form, through local events and digitally, the news is rolling in Germany, Europe and beyond: showing us how our freedom is being attacked, how fear is being spread, how public acceptance of justice, police or emergency services is being undermined and how the rule of law is being upset.

A few examples, only from Germany?

We do not accept “that people are exposed to hatred, contempt and violence. We do so because we take decisive action against those who persecute others because of their origin, skin colour and religion”, said Angela Merkel on February 23, 2012, during her speech to the bereaved families of NSU victims at the memorial service. Nevertheless: the perpetrators and masterminds of the NSU terror could not be unmasked.

It does not stop:

  • In Germany, threatening letters under the keyword NSU 2.0 continue to stir up fear.
  • Migrants, like the 35-year-old mother of two children, Mercedes Kierpacz, are murdered for racist motives.
  • People, like Walter Lübke, had to give their lives because they stood up for the integration of migrants and against Pegida.
  • Writers of hate and threatening messages try to terrorize people who stand up for the freedom of everyone, even on the net.

What else did Angela Merkel say? “We do not accept that people are exposed to hate, contempt, violence or attacks on their lives! We demand that our justice system take decisive action against those who persecute others because of their origin, skin colour or religion.”

What can we do?
